Welcome to The Automation Advantage!
This week has been filled with moments of connection, reflection, and even a little festive fun. I attended the North Worcestershire Business Leaders Christmas Lunch, a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with so many inspiring people after the awards season and reflect on the year that’s nearly behind us.
One thing that really stood out to me at the event was the incredible ability of businesses to do good. I was particularly moved by Unique IQ’s initiative to collect new and used toys for the children of Redditch in to support the Salvation Army and Isaac’s Food Bank. Seeing businesses come together to make a difference was a reminder that no action is too small to create a ripple effect of positivity.
On the topic of giving back, I also dusted off my Santa hat this week for the Redditch Round Table Santa Sleigh, something I’ve had the privilege of doing for the past 11 years. There’s something amazing about connecting with the local community bringing joy to families and children with a bit of music, a sleigh and of course a dancing Santa.
Now is a great time to pause, reflect, and plan ahead.
That reflection got me thinking: what can we do differently next year? This doesn’t have to mean massive changes. Sometimes, it’s the smallest, simplest tweaks that lead to the biggest results. This is where the concept of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) fits in perfectly.
The MVP approach—creating a functional version of something to test, learn, and adapt—is just as relevant in business planning as it is in software development. Steven Bartlett recently spoke about creating a culture of experimentation, accepting failure, and using it as a stepping stone for progress. His insights reminded me that progress over perfection should always be the goal, especially as we look toward the new year.
As you think about the year ahead, ask yourself:
What small changes could make the biggest difference?
Where can you experiment and learn faster?
How can you apply MVP thinking to tackle your goals one step at a time?
This week’s edition is all about embracing MVPs and planning smarter—not harder—for the year ahead.

What Exactly Is an MVP?
An MVP is the simplest version of your product that delivers core functionality to solve a problem or meet a need. It’s not a half-baked concept or a prototype—it’s a working solution that can be put in front of real users to test and validate your ideas.
Think of it as a stepping stone: it gets you moving in the right direction without sinking too much time or money into features you’re not yet sure users need.
For example:
Instead of building an entire enterprise-level CRM, you launch a basic tool that tracks client interactions and provides reporting on key metrics.
Instead of designing a full-fledged eCommerce site, you start with a single product page and a simple checkout process.
Takeaway: An MVP isn’t about cutting corners; it’s about focusing on what matters most to deliver value quickly and iteratively.
The Advantages of MVPs in Digital Transformation
Digital transformation projects often fail because they’re too ambitious out of the gate. An MVP avoids this by providing these key benefits:
Speed to Market
By focusing on core functionality, you can launch faster and start delivering value sooner.
Lower Risk
MVPs allow you to test assumptions with minimal investment, reducing the risk of wasted resources.
User Feedback
Real-world use reveals what’s working and what needs improvement, letting you adapt before scaling.
Scalable Foundation
Starting small ensures that your product grows in the right direction, built on a foundation informed by actual user needs.
I’ve seen first-hand how MVPs empower businesses to pivot quickly and innovate effectively. One client launched an MVP for their internal inventory system, which not only streamlined their operations but also uncovered unexpected use cases that shaped the next phase of development.
Takeaway: An MVP is a way to balance ambition with pragmatism—launching something meaningful without betting the farm.
How to Use MVPs to Maximise Impact
Building a successful MVP doesn’t happen by accident. Here’s a roadmap to ensure your MVP delivers:
Define Your Core Problem
Ask: What’s the single most important issue we’re trying to solve?
Identify Essential Features
Focus on functionality that directly addresses your core problem. Save the “nice-to-haves” for later.
Set Success Metrics
Decide how you’ll measure whether the MVP is working. For example: reduced time spent on a task, improved user engagement, or increased conversions.
Launch and Listen
Release your MVP to a controlled group of users and gather their feedback. Use what you learn to guide your next steps.
Iterate and Improve
Based on user input, prioritise enhancements that align with your goals and bring the most value.
Takeaway: Think of an MVP as an ongoing conversation with your users—it’s a process, not a one-and-done effort.
Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about digital transformation, it’s this: trying to do everything at once often leads to doing nothing at all. An MVP breaks the cycle of indecision and inaction, giving you a way to move forward with purpose and agility.
Take a moment to reflect on your current digital transformation initiatives. Are you aiming for perfection, or are you prioritising progress? The right MVP could be the catalyst your business needs to accelerate transformation and deliver meaningful results.
