Why Do So Many Software Projects Fail?
How better scoping (not faster coding) saves time, budget and sanity.
Read Time: 4 Minutes
Let’s talk about the bit no one likes to admit.
Every business has one: the expensive tool no one uses. The app that quietly died. The project that looked promising, until it didn’t.
We’ve all seen it, or felt it.
The common reason? The build started before the thinking finished.
This week, we’re unpacking why failed projects usually begin with unclear goals, and how better scoping tools can change everything.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
⚙️ It’s Not the Build. It’s the Brief.
🚀 Smarter Scoping Is Now Easier Than Ever
🔑 A Real-World Reminder
While in Nancy, France last week, I found myself standing in the central square, surrounded by history.
It struck me how much care, planning and vision went into building something that could last for centuries.
The French have a way of reminding you to slow down, to think before you act, to enjoy the process, not just the outcome.
And it got me thinking about our own work at GGA.
Right now, the team are deep into a consultancy phase for a new project.
Different scale, same truth: the best builds don’t start with code, they start with clear thinking, alignment, and a strong foundation.
That’s exactly what this week’s newsletter is about 👇

Out for a walk on a super hot day in Nancy to take in the sights. As much as I hate selfies, Fraser decided to photobomb my pic, so featuring in my newsletter is sweet revenge.
It’s Not the Build. It’s the Brief.
We’ve seen it too many times:
A feature list without a strategy
An MVP scoped on gut instinct
A deadline that came before the goal
You wouldn’t build a house without drawings. But in software? People try it all the time.
What’s missing is the thinking space. That point where stakeholders align, assumptions are challenged, and outcomes are made clear.
Not in a Word doc.
Not in a dev ticket.
But visually. Interactively. With proper tooling and process.
Nugget #1: Most failures start with a fuzzy brief, not a bad dev team.
Smarter Scoping Is Now Easier Than Ever
We’re big fans of tools like FeatureMap and ScopeMaster, because they help teams think together before they build apart.
They let you:
✅ Break down features visually
✅ Spot dependencies early
✅ Align user needs with business goals
✅ Prioritise before a single ticket’s written
But tools are only half the equation.
It’s how you use them that matters.
That’s why at GGA, we lead with consultancy. Before we quote or code, we map, challenge and clarify.
We run interactive workshops with decision-makers and users, using digital whiteboards, maps and scorecards. The goal? Confidence before cost.
Nugget #2: Smarter scoping → smarter software.
A Real-World Reminder
Last year, a client came to us with a half-built platform and a very long list of "must-haves".
We paused the build.
Instead, we pulled them into a half-day scoping workshop. We mapped features against business impact and user flow.
What happened?
40 percent of the backlog was scrapped
Several “must-haves” became “maybe laters”
A faster, leaner MVP was launched 3 months sooner
And now? The platform’s live, useful and used.
Nugget #3: Specs don’t build alignment. Conversations do.
What Can You Do Today?
🔹 List your current feature backlog. What’s genuinely business-critical?
🔹 Run a 15-minute whiteboard session with your team. Map the user journey.
🔹 Ask this: “What problem are we really solving?”
Scoping isn’t overhead. It’s how you avoid failure before it happens.
Strong briefs build stronger software.

P.S. If your business could benefit from a quote engine, portal or tool that sets you apart, let’s chat. You don’t need to build an empire, just something smart that your customers will love.
