What questions did clients ask us most in Q3?
Why your software should give answers, not just outputs.
Read Time: 4 Minutes
In Q3, one client asked us the best question of the year: ‘What’s the software actually telling us?’
“What’s the software actually telling us?”
Because building a tool is only half the win.
The other half? Helping teams learn from what they’ve built, and use that insight to work smarter, faster, and with more confidence.
This week’s issue is a short but sharp reflection on:
⚙️ Insight is the new output
🚀 Helping clients learn from their own systems
🔑 Real example: The feature that gave clarity
The best question I heard in Q3 wasn’t about features or deadlines.
It was this: “What happens to job satisfaction when AI can do all the work?”
I’ll be honest, my first reaction was worry.
For my team, for our clients, for the craft of what we do.
But the more I sat with it, the more I realised: it’s exactly the kind of question we need to be asking.
And it kept coming up.
In our team retro.
On our Ctrl Alt Dev podcast.
At a talk I gave on Replit.
And even on a 5:30am walk for men’s mental health charity AndysManClub, where a stranger named Kevin and I ended up deep in conversation about it.
Different settings, same theme: people don’t just want to know what we’re building.
They want to know what we’re learning, and what it means for the future.
That’s what this week’s newsletter is about 👇

Sometimes the real breakthrough isn’t in what we build, but in what it teaches us.
Insight is the new output
We’ve seen a shift lately.
Clients don’t just want their platform to work.
They want to learn from it.
They’re asking:
Are people actually using this feature?
Where are users getting stuck?
What’s the next improvement we should prioritise?
That’s where embedded dashboards and usage analytics are making a real difference.
Not to show off, but to learn.
Nugget #1: Smart tools don’t just work. They teach.
Helping clients learn from their own systems
It’s easy to assume clients “just want it done”. But more often than not, they want to own their platform.
That means:
✅ Seeing what’s working in real time
✅ Understanding where the value is being delivered
✅ Spotting friction before it becomes failure
And no, this doesn’t need to be a full-blown analytics suite.
Even a simple usage dashboard can unlock better decisions, faster.
Nugget #2: Show clients the value, and they’ll make better calls.
Real example: The feature that gave clarity
One of our clients runs a platform used by leaderships teams. They wanted to know:
“Is anyone using the planning feature we built last year?”
We added a quick usage tracker. Within a week, the answer was clear:
Yes, but only on mobile
Mostly used by company admins role
Rarely used on older devices
That tiny bit of insight shaped their entire product roadmap for Q4.
They didn’t just guess what to do next. They knew.
Nugget #3: The value of a feature isn’t in what it does, but in what it reveals.
What can you do today?
🔹 Pick one key feature in your system
🔹 Ask, “What does usage of this tell us?”
🔹 Consider adding a simple dashboard or tracker
Companies don’t just want software that works.
They want tools that teach them how to grow.
Keep asking the better questions. That’s where the real breakthroughs start. Paul Rhodes Founder, Green Gorilla Apps | ![]() |
