Is Your Tech Stack Ready for Q3 and Beyond?
Why Mid-Year Is the Perfect Time to Rethink, Refocus, and Rebuild What’s Not Working
Read Time: 4 Minutes
The halfway point of the year is a brilliant time to reflect and an even better time to prepare.
As Q3 creeps up on us, there’s something I always ask our clients (and myself):
Does your tech still serve your goals or are you working around it?
Because here’s what I’ve learned after 20+ years in software:
🧱 What worked in January might already be holding you back in July.
📉 Outdated tools don’t just slow you down, they change how your team thinks.
🧩 And patching over problems rarely solves them, it just makes them harder to find later.
This week, we’re digging into how to future-proof your tech stack, so you’re not stuck rethinking it mid-crisis.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
⚙️ The Hidden Cost of “It’s Fine For Now”
🚀 How to Audit Your Tech Stack (Without the Headache)
🔑 A Real-World Example of Smart Tech Alignment
Let’s dive in 👇
I'm writing this just before heading out to Parkrun, my second one in a row after a very casual ten-year break.
Back in 2015, I did a half marathon. It all started with Parkrun.
Then life happened. Work. Kids. Beer. The usual.
But this summer, I’m back at it.
Why? Because it’s the halfway point of the year, and it felt like the right time to reset some systems, in life and in business.
Last week, Erin (our PM) and I had one of those meetings where you accidentally start a full-blown audit.
We were talking about the 8 wastes and our cash conversion cycle, and somehow ended up deep in subscription purgatory, reviewing every tool we’re paying for.
Some got the chop.
Some redeemed themselves.
And a few? We realised we’d be lost without them:
✅ Loom async updates that save hours of meetings we all pretend were useful.
✅ Gamma stunning decks without the PowerPoint pain.
✅ CodeRabbit AI code reviews that increases both speed and quality.
✅ Tuple screen sharing for teams that actually works.
It was like digital spring cleaning and wildly satisfying.
Just like Parkrun, it reminded me:
Sometimes you don’t need a full reinvention.
You just need to restart the right habits and ditch the ones that stopped serving you.

(Taken after Parkrun) Last week’s Parkrun was a struggle but I managed a smile at the end.
The Tools You Use Shape the Work You Do
There’s a silent cost to a bloated or brittle tech stack, and it’s not always obvious.
Maybe it’s the slow CRM that no one likes but no one questions.
Maybe it’s the six tools you use to do what one should.
Maybe it’s the shared spreadsheet that’s become a part-time job to maintain.
The reality? Every workaround is your team telling you the system’s broken, without saying it out loud.
Takeaway: If your team is spending more time managing tools than delivering value, it’s time to pause and reassess.
Here’s a red flag: “We know it’s not perfect, but it works for now.”
That phrase is responsible for:
❌ Lost productivity
❌ Slower onboarding
❌ Missed insights
❌ Tired, frustrated teams
The problem with “fine for now” is that it always becomes “broken at the worst possible moment.”
Nugget #1: Band-aid tech always comes back to bite you, usually when you’re busiest.
How to Audit Your Tech Stack (Without the Headache)
You don’t need a full systems overhaul to make a smart move in Q3. Start here:
🔍 Ask your team: What tools feel clunky? What’s confusing? What’s duplicated?
⚙️ Look at overlap: Are you paying for features you never use, across multiple tools?
📊 Check performance: Are your systems slowing you down or speeding you up?
🎯 Tie it to goals: Does your current setup actually support your Q3 priorities?
This isn’t about being ruthless for the sake of it. It’s about getting lean, aligned, and future-ready.
Nugget #2: If your tools aren’t actively helping you grow, they’re quietly holding you back.
A Real-World Example of Smart Tech Alignment
One of our clients, a growing HR consultancy, was thriving, but drowning in disconnected systems.
❌ Manual onboarding spreadsheets
❌ Proposal tools that didn’t integrate
❌ Reporting done in three different platforms
They didn’t need “more software.”
They needed better alignment.
We helped them:
✅ Replace three tools with one tailored platform
✅ Automate onboarding and contract generation
✅ Create live dashboards tied to key metrics
The result?
30% more time spent on billable work
Faster turnaround for clients
A team that finally felt in flow, not in firefighting mode
Nugget #3: They didn’t just tidy up their tech, they freed their team to grow.
What Can You Do Today?
We’re mid-year. Take an hour. Block it out. Ask these three questions:
🔹 What’s no longer fit for purpose?
🔹 Where are we repeating ourselves or working around systems?
🔹 What one upgrade could unlock better performance in Q3?
Because the tech you choose isn’t just a background decision, it shapes how your team works, thinks, and scales.
