How to Lead with Integrity in 2025

The Foundation of Trust, Growth, and Long-Term Success

Read Time: 4 Minutes

Trust is earned, not given.

In 2025, integrity in leadership isn’t just expected, it’s essential.

With economic and political shifts, AI implementation, and increasing transparency, businesses are under more scrutiny than ever.

Customers, employees, and investors aren’t just looking at what you do, but how you do it.

So, how do you lead with integrity in a world that’s changing faster than ever?

Here’s what we’ll cover this week:

⚙️ Why Integrity Is a Competitive Advantage

🚀 How to Build Trust Through Action, Not Words

🔑 A Real-World Example of Integrity in Leadership

Let’s dive in! 👇

Next week, I’ll be stepping back onto the stage to deliver a workshop for business leaders on “Leading Ourselves” focusing on authentic, purposeful leadership, based on values and finding your why.

It’s one thing to say you lead with integrity, but another to live it, day in and day out.

That’s why this session is built around real discussions, honest reflection, and interactive exercises, with the help of Mentimeter (if you haven’t used it, highly recommended for engagement!).

I’ll be honest, I’m a little nervous.

It’s been a while since I’ve spoken in front of an audience (pre Covid), and while I love these conversations, there’s always that pre-event adrenaline rush/nerves!

But this year, I’m pushing myself to do more of it, including a speaking gig on “Automation and AI” at London Olympia for the Business Innovation Expo this September.

Why? Because integrity in leadership isn’t just about what you know, it’s about sharing, learning, and challenging yourself.

Rare shots of me before I fully embraced the wisdom (and extra grey hairs) that come with leadership.

Why Integrity Is a Competitive Advantage

Most people think of integrity as just “doing the right thing.”

But in business, integrity is also a long-term growth strategy, one that separates businesses that survive from those that thrive.

Here’s why:

✔️ Trust Attracts Talent - The best employees want to work for leaders who prioritise fairness, accountability, and transparency. A strong workplace culture built on integrity reduces turnover and increases engagement.

✔️ Customers Stay Loyal - People don’t just buy products; they buy into brands. Businesses that are open, honest, and ethical build stronger customer relationships, leading to higher retention and word-of-mouth growth.

✔️ Resilience in Tough Times - When businesses prioritise short-term wins over long-term trust, they set themselves up for failure when a crisis hits. Companies with a strong foundation of integrity have loyal customers, engaged employees, and solid partnerships, giving them a competitive edge when challenges arise.

Real-World Proof: During the pandemic, businesses that treated their employees fairly whether through job security, transparent communication, or fair policies, saw faster recoveries and stronger customer loyalty than those that didn’t.

Integrity doesn’t just feel good… it delivers results.

Nugget #1: Leading with integrity isn’t just about ethics. It’s about building a sustainable, future-proof business that people trust and want to be part of.

How to Build Trust Through Action, Not Words

It’s easy to say your business values integrity.

Plenty of companies put words like honesty and trust in their mission statements.

But here’s the truth: Integrity isn’t built on words, it’s built on decisions.

Every interaction, every policy, and every tough call either reinforces or weakens trust with your employees, customers, and partners.

Here’s how to lead with integrity in practical ways:

💬 Radical Transparency – Be open about both successes and setbacks. People respect honesty over spin. If something doesn’t go to plan, own it and share how you’ll improve.

⚖️ Accountability at Every Level – Integrity starts at the top. If leaders take responsibility, it sets the tone for everyone else. Mistakes happen, what matters is how they’re handled.

📢 Listen, Then Lead – Integrity isn’t just about doing the right thing, it’s about considering diverse perspectives before making decisions. Employees and customers can tell when their feedback is actually valued (vs. just collected and ignored).

🚫 Say No When It Matters – Some opportunities look great on paper but don’t align with your values. It could be an investor with different ethical standards or a business partnership that requires cutting corners. Walking away from the wrong deal is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Nugget #2: Integrity isn’t about a single big moment. It’s about the small, consistent decisions that shape your reputation over time.

A Real-World Example of Integrity in Leadership

My biggest lesson in business: “You get more of what you tolerate.”

Read that again, it’s massive! ^^^

I’ve learned this the hard way. Whether it’s in leadership, decision-making, or project management, delaying tough calls only makes things worse.

Here are two real-world examples where I hesitated, then acted. And once I did, I wished I had done it sooner.

When Tough Decisions Strengthen Your Team

As a leader, there’s nothing more uncomfortable for me than letting someone go.

No one wants to do it.

But when other team members start questioning a colleague’s integrity and commitment, you have to listen.

One person’s behaviour can quickly and quietly undermine the culture you’re trying to build.

For too long, I hoped things would improve.

I told myself, maybe they’ll step up. Maybe I haven’t given enough feedback.

But the truth is, when the rest of your team sees you tolerate poor commitment, they lose faith in your leadership.

Eventually, I made the call.

And as tough as it was, the instant clarity and shift in morale proved it was the right decision all along.

💡 Takeaway: Delaying action doesn’t just hurt your business, it damages trust within your team. If you know something needs to change, act sooner, not later.

When Passion Isn’t Enough. Knowing When to Walk Away.

WellGiving was a project full of hope and ambition.

One that had the potential to do make a difference.

It felt like the kind of initiative that should work.

But hope is not a strategy.

When I stepped back and studied the numbers, it was clear.

Business is a numbers game played by a team.

I knew deep down that we were forcing something that wasn’t sustainable.

And the longer we held on, the more energy and resources it drained.

Big companies like Google have a simple principle: “Fail Fast, Learn Faster”

And once I did? The relief was instant. I only wished I’d done it sooner.

💡 Takeaway: Integrity in leadership means making decisions based on reality, not wishful thinking. If something isn’t working, cut your losses and move forward.

Act Now, Not Later

If you’re delaying a tough decision, ask yourself:

• What’s the cost of waiting?

• What signals am I sending to my team by tolerating this?

• If I made the decision today, would I feel relief?

Nine times out of ten, you already know the right decision. You just haven’t acted on it yet.

Nugget #3: You know it was the right call when, once you take action, you wish you had done it sooner.

What Can You Do Today?

Integrity isn’t just about big, defining moments. It’s about the small, daily decisions that shape your business and leadership over time.

Here’s how you can start leading with integrity today:

1️⃣ Make the Tough Call You’ve Been Avoiding

Whether it’s a difficult conversation, a business decision, or addressing a cultural issue in your team, delaying action only makes it harder. Ask yourself: If I made this decision today, would I feel relief?

2️⃣ Audit Your Leadership Decisions

Take 15 minutes to reflect:

🔹 Where have I compromised on my values?

🔹 What’s one decision I’ve been putting off that I know is the right one?

🔹 How can I be more transparent with my team or customers?

3️⃣ Reinforce Integrity in Your Business

Lead by example:

✅ Communicate openly, even when the message is tough.

✅ Say no to things that don’t align with your values.

✅ Hold yourself and your team accountable to high standards.

💡 Final Thought: The hardest decisions are often the ones that define your leadership. Integrity isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being consistent.

What’s one action you can take right now to reinforce trust in your business? 🚀

Integrity isn’t just about doing the right thing, it’s about building a business people trust, respect, and want to be part of.
