How Accessibility Enhances User Experience
Unlock Growth with Inclusive, User-Friendly Technology
Read Time: 5 Minutes
Great experiences aren’t exclusive—they’re accessible to everyone.
From websites to apps to internal tools, accessibility isn’t just about ticking compliance boxes. It’s about creating experiences that work for all users—regardless of ability, age, or tech skills.
The best part? Improving accessibility often improves the experience for everyone.
Here’s what we’ll cover this week:
⚙️ Why Accessibility Is a Business Advantage
🚀 Practical Steps to Make Your Tech More Inclusive
🔑 A Real-World Example of Accessibility Done Right
Let’s dive in! 👇
Kurt and I attended Tech Mids Conference during Brum Tech Week, where we had the privilege of hearing Molly Watt’s talk on “Thinking About Inclusion.”
Molly’s talk hit us hard. We knew accessibility mattered, but we had never grasped just how many people are left out of digital experiences - and how easily we could change that.
Here’s the thing: unless accessibility is baked into your company’s culture and mission, it’s easy to ignore.
And when we talk about “users,” we’re not just talking about customers, we mean everyone using your systems, including your employees.
Let that sink in for a moment.
During her talk, Molly pointed out something so simple yet so powerful: If you wear glasses, you need accessibility adaptations to enjoy a good user experience.
I’ve worked in tech for over 20 years, and I’d never once thought about how something as common as wearing glasses impacts UX design and inclusivity.
How many other seemingly “small” things are we overlooking?
And more importantly - what happens when we start paying attention?
Accessibility isn’t just about meeting regulations, it’s about respecting your users’ time, abilities, and patience. And when businesses get it right, the benefits go far beyond a small group of users.
Let’s explore why accessibility isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smartest move for your business.

Why Accessibility Is a Business Advantage
Making your software accessible isn’t just good ethics… it’s a competitive advantage. The demand for inclusive technology is skyrocketing, and companies that act now will be the ones leading the market, not failing their users. Here’s why:
Massive Market Opportunity: An assistive technology report by the World Health Organisation, states that by 2050 nearly 3.5 billion people will rely on assistive technologies in their daily lives.
Better Usability for All: Features like larger buttons, clearer text, and intuitive navigation don’t just help users with disabilities - they improve the experience for everyone, from aging populations to non-tech-savvy users. •
Legal & Reputational Benefits: Regulations are tightening, and digital accessibility is no longer optional for many sectors. The Sixth Annual State of Digital Accessibility Report shows that companies are increasingly prioritising accessibility to stay compliant and protect their brand reputation.
💡 Nugget #1: Accessibility isn’t a cost - it’s an investment in growth, usability, and future-proofing your business.
Practical Steps to Make Your Tech More Inclusive
Accessibility doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Small changes can have a big impact. Start with these practical, high-impact steps:
🔍 Simplify Navigation: Make menus and key actions easy to find and use. Cluttered layouts and hidden options create barriers for everyone - especially those using assistive tech.
🎙️ Provide Alternative Content: Captions for videos, alt text for images, and transcripts for audio content make your content accessible to screen readers and help in noisy environments (think: commuting, offices, or cafés).
🔲 Design for Contrast & Clarity: High-contrast text, readable fonts, and well-structured layouts improve accessibility for those with visual impairments, dyslexia, and cognitive differences - and make reading easier for everyone.
🛠️ Test with Real Users: Accessibility tools are great, but nothing beats real feedback. Engage users with different needs to uncover barriers you might have missed.
🧠 Go Beyond Compliance: The best experiences aren’t just compliant - they’re intuitive, effortless, and welcoming to all.
💡 Nugget #2: Accessibility isn’t about perfection - it’s about continuous improvement, real-world testing, and genuine empathy for your users.
A Real-World Example of Accessibility Done Right
When working with a client whose users include NHS staff, universities, and care homes, accessibility wasn’t just an ideal - it was a requirement.
Many of their users had varying degrees of disability, meaning the platform needed to be designed for maximum inclusivity. And to even be considered as a provider, they had to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.
So, we got to work.
🔹 We implemented a full accessibility audit, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.2 at every stage.
🔹 We applied the checklist of best practices (covered above), refining navigation, improving contrast, and integrating assistive tech compatibility.
🔹 We didn’t stop at compliance. Accessibility is an ongoing effort, not a one-time fix.
Transparency is Key: The Accessibility Statement
Beyond just implementation, documenting both successes and limitations is critical. That’s why we helped the client create an Accessibility Statement, ensuring users know:
✅ What’s compliant
⚠️ What still needs improvement
📩 How to report issues
A section of their Accessibility Statement looked like this:
This website conforms to W3.org (World Wide Web Consortium) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2). There are a few exceptions, which are listed below.
How to Report a Problem: If you experience difficulties using this website, please contact [[email protected]] with details of the issue.
Areas for Improvement
Issue | Level | Reason | Pages Affected |
|---|---|---|---|
Some PDFs are not accessible | AA | Third-party documents | Reports & Downloads |
Certain interactive maps | AAA | Vendor limitation | Location pages |
Video captions missing | AA | Legacy content backlog | Blog posts before 2022 |
The Result?
By proactively addressing accessibility and providing transparency, the client:
✅ Met WCAG 2.2 compliance, qualifying as a provider for NHS, universities, and care homes
✅ Improved user experience for all, especially those with disabilities
✅ Reduced support tickets related to navigation and readability
✅ Established a culture of continuous improvement, with a documented roadmap for further enhancements
💡 Nugget #3: Accessibility isn’t just about compliance - it’s about creating an experience that works for everyone, and committing to ongoing improvements.
What Can You Do Today?
Accessibility doesn’t have to be an overwhelming overhaul - it starts with small, intentional steps.
Take a moment to assess your digital tools:
✅Can all users navigate your app easily?
Test for clarity, simplicity, and ease of use - if it takes too many clicks or confuses users, it’s a barrier.
✅ Do you offer multiple ways to consume content?
Captions, transcripts, and alt text ensure that videos, images, and audio content are accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.
✅ Are you designing with empathy?
Involve real users with different needs in testing - what works for one group might exclude another. Accessibility is about real-world usability, not just compliance.
🚀 What’s next?
Start today. Pick just one thing, maybe adding alt text, improving contrast, or simplifying navigation. It doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be better than yesterday.
Never underestimate the power of 1% incremental changes.
💡 Accessibility isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smartest move you can make. Because when everyone can engage with your solution, everyone wins!
